Eriko Yamaki | Composer & Jazz Pianist
Eriko Yamaki began studying piano at the age of three, flute at eleven, and jazz piano at eighteen. After graduating from Kunitachi College of Music with a degree in flute performance, she moved to the United States to study composition at Berklee College of Music. Following her graduation, she performed actively as a jazz pianist in the Boston area. She studied piano with Jun Oishi, flute with Toshinori Ishihara, and composition with Greg Hopkins.
She later stepped away from performing for a number of years, during which time she accompanied her daughter on violin and immersed herself in classical music, particularly orchestral and chamber music. After raising her family, Yamaki returned to performing and formed the jazz trio TRIchrO. The trio released the album Gravity and toured throughout Japan. She has continued to perform regularly, pursuing her distinctive musical voice through projects that bring together elements of classical music and jazz.
As a composer, Yamaki began receiving international recognition after her piano solo Mysterious Bell was selected as a finalist in the 2018 Nosa ISAM Composition Competition. She later became a finalist in the Kwidzyn Classical Music Competition. Her piano trio Multiple Views From a Window was praised by David Kettle in The Strad Magazine as “a dense, lockdown-inspired creation of exemplary focus and intensity,” with violin, cello, and piano coming together as a unified ensemble.
Her compositions span a wide range of genres and ensembles, from delicate works for solo flute to richly sonorous music for string orchestra. Her music has been performed and warmly received in cities around the world, including Tokyo, Kyoto, Boston, New York, Athens, Chișinău, Belarus, and Lviv.
In spring 2026, her music began to be published by the historic Austrian music publisher Universal Edition. This autumn, a new work for flute quartet and piano will receive its premiere in Tokyo, followed by the premiere of a new string quartet at the end of the year. In spring 2027, her Flute Concerto is scheduled to receive its world premiere by flutist Iwona Glinka and the Lviv Symphony Orchestra, followed by a recording of the work.
